Table Finishes
Whether you're preparing food or serving up a feast, we have a finish to complement your lifestyle.

Food Grade Oil
The food grade oil finish is a basic mineral oil based finish. An initial coat
of low viscosity mineral oil finish is applied to the top. The
positive aspect of this finish is that it is completely inert and
FDA approved. It also allows re-sanding and ding or dent repair
at any time. The negative aspect is that the finish will have to
be renewed on a regular basis with either retail mineral oil or
our Glumber Oil. The
renewal basis will vary based on use, but once a month is an average
treatment interval. Maintaining the oil finish is very important
to the long term
life of the surface. This is the finish you
will find on most commercially available Butcherblocks and is generally
what we'd recommend for our Taglio line of work surfaces. This
finish may give the appearance the top is still wet on delivery, the top
is ready to use. At left

Durata
The Durata® permanent finish is our recommended finish for non-chopping applications
and low maintenance applications. The finish is excellent for high
wear, commercial applications such as our Tavolo and Infinite Series
tables. This finish is composed of a special
sealer washcoat applied top and bottom to seal the wood. That coat
is followed by a polyester seal coat for physical toughness and
hardness. The final finish
coat is a catalyzed polyurethane for scratch resistance and chemical
resistance. This finish has received the highest possible rating
for durability from
the Architectural Woodworking Institute using methods developed
by ASTM, a worldwide standard setting organization.
This finish is completely resistance to water or chemical penetration. Very hard solvents such as lacquer thinner or alcohol will not affect this finish. Once fully cured this finish is highly resistant to scratching. This finish is approved for FDA indirect exposure (ie. Kneading dough), but not chopping. Chopping applications should be avoided. Available in a 35 sheen (satin).
Stock Stains & Glazes
Our stock stain supply continues to grow; we currently offer more than 40 stock stain choices to acheive nearly any color imaginable. Choose a stock stain and glaze combination from sample chips or a custom wood stain ladder. Our stock stains and glazes are only available in conjunction with the Durata® finish.
Custom Stains & Glazes
Our custom stain matching service is unsurpassed for accuracy, with a *Delta E of 0.5 or less. We can match a glaze to any cabinet door-sized sample, while stains can be matched to any size sample. Custom stains and glazes can only be used in conjunction with the Durata ® permanent finish.
Distressing & Aging
All Grothouse surfaces can be distressed to evoke the appearance of an original antique. This deliberate process is carefully executed to mimic the hard use or elemental wear that is seen over time on both the top, side and bottom edges. This must be done very carefully to assure that the wear does not look "purposeful" or "factory made." Glaze and stain can be added to accentuate the distressed piece. Careful communication and an exchange of samples assure the desired result.
Grothouse offers five standard levels of distressing: four basic levels and one super distressed level.
- Level #1: Lightly worn corners and edges and light dings
- Level #2: Moderate worn corners and edges, moderate dings and light drag marks
- Level #3: Heavily worn corners and edges, numerous dings, spotty worm holes and moderate drag marks
- Level #4: Very heavily and unevenly worn corners and edges, plentiful dings, clusters of worm holes, plentiful drag marks and termite tracks
- Super Distressed: Very heavily and very unevenly worn corners and edges, plentiful dings and notch marks, clusters of worm holes, plentiful scratches / drag marks / cracks in clusters, waffle hammer dings and circular dings, heavy edge nicks, termite tracks
